Our Story

Two People, One Breed, and a Whole Lot of Love

The Berner's Ranch is run by Roger in Gassaway, West Virginia — a small family operation built around a breed we genuinely love.

How The Berner's Ranch Came to Be

Roger runs The Berner's Ranch. He lives in Gassaway, West Virginia, in the hills of Braxton County, and he raises Bernese Mountain Dogs. Not many of them — just enough to do it properly.

He fell for Berners for the same reason most people do. They are big and calm and impossibly gentle. They follow you from room to room, they lean on you, they make a house feel like a home in a way that is hard to explain until you have lived with one.

Somewhere along the way, friends started asking whether he would ever have puppies. Then strangers. So he did it the way he would want it done for his own family — health testing on every adult, honest answers, and no rush. If the timing is not right, he will tell you to wait.

Today he places a small number of Berners with families each year. Some are local, some he has only ever met over FaceTime, either way nobody takes a puppy home without a real conversation first!

"We listen first. Then we help you find the Berner that fits your family."

— Roger

Licensed & Regulated

The Berner's Ranch is fully licensed and regulated. We hold four separate licenses — a USDA license, a business license, a kennel license, and a breeding license — so how we raise and place our dogs is accountable to someone other than us.

What We Believe

How We Do Things

Not a mission statement. Just the rules we actually hold ourselves to.

The dogs come first

They live in our home, not in a kennel building. That is the whole reason we stay small.

Families are not transactions

We would rather talk with you for an hour than hand you a puppy and disappear.

Honest about health

Every adult is DNA tested and clear. If something is not right, we tell you — every time.

Right dog, right home

We will happily tell you a Berner is not the right fit, if that is the truth.

We would love to hear from you.

Tell us about your family and what you are hoping for. There is never any pressure.
